Bannikov Andrei Valer'evich, Gorbacheva Yuliya Gennad'evna

Abstract. In the Greco-Roman period sea battles played an important role in military history. To achieve victory antique admirals had to obey certain rules that had been developed as a result of the centuries-old practice of fighting prosecution. First of all, it was important to determine the place and time of the upcoming conflict with the enemy. Among the tactical methods of fighting prosecution two most commonly used ones were ‘diekpl’ and ‘peripl’. During the first one ships sailed through the battle line of the enemy breaking the oars of its vessels. The second one meant the enemy encirclement.
Key words and phrases: флот, морские сражения, корабли, диэкпл, перипл, финикида, navy, sea battles, ships, diekpl (frontal line breakthrough), peripl (encircling the enemy with moving ships), signal purple admiral (Phoenician) flag
