Abstract. The article is devoted to the change of Soviet power’s policy towards the Russian Orthodox Church during the Great Patriotic War. The authors reveal the prerequisites, course and results of these transformations. Special attention is paid to the activity of the clergymen during the war, and also to the reforms aimed at the official recognition of the Church as an institute serving the interests of the state. On the basis of the conducted analysis of the position of the Soviet Union at the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, the general political course of the Soviet leadership headed by J. V. Stalin and the role of the clergy in the life of the Soviet society and among the military men of the Red Army the authors manage to answer the raised question about the reasons of the change of relationships between Soviet power and the Russian Orthodox Church.
