ON THE ISSUE OF STUDYING CIVILIZATION ESSENCE

Abstract. The article reveals the concept "civilization" that becomes more and more prevalent in today’s social studies. The focus of the author’s attention is on the critical analysis of two alternative approaches to defining essence of civilization. The paper also analyzes such terms as "civilization identity" and "civilization self-consciousness". The researcher concludes that civilization self-consciousness is foundation of civilization, thanks to which it exists as historical integrity for a long time.
