Abstract. The authors consider how the motif of "ordeals" in the novel "The Brothers Karamazov" by F. M. Dostoevskii is used to express the main idea of the novel – the possibility of spiritual rebirth of a man, regardless of his sin, even in the face of the society moral decline, and show that the ideas of ??orthodox anthropology are the basis of the novel conception and are expressed at all levels of its ideological-artistic content, and the motif of "ordeals" that Dmitri Karamazov "goes through" during the preliminary investigation, dates back to orthodox eschatology, where ordeals are understood as a test of the soul after the death and the first stage of Last Judgement. But from this point, the spiritual rebirth of the hero begins from the perspective of orthodox humanity.
