Abstract. The creative work of little known in wider circles of readers Nizhnii Novgorod writer of the second half of the XIX th century A. V. Karpov, who contributed to the development of native country studies, ethnology, folklore, statistics, was mainly focused on journalism. At present time "Sketches of Popular Self-Government" reported by A. K. Oreshnikov, the author of "belated obituary" "A Few Words about A. V. Karpov", to the editorial of "Nizhnii Novgorod Provincial Bulletin" in 1886 was republished. Subsequently A. V. Karpov resorted to the artistic word, but it did not make him famous on international level. He died at the peak of his creative career.
