Abstract. The authors consider the problem of using a differentiated approach to mastering the educational and research competence by technical higher education establishment postgraduates by means of a foreign language, reveal the directions of differentiation, and present the functions that the differential approach performs in the process of foreign language educational and research competence formation under conditions of education modernization.
