Murom Institute (Branch) of Vladimir State Universitynamed after A. G. and N. G. Stoletovs

Abstract. In the article the etymological analysis of hydronyms (names of rivers and lakes) which flow in the territory of modern Murom district of Vladimir region is carried out. As a result, the names which have a Mordvinian origin, mainly Erzya, are revealed. Afterwards, with the arrival at the stated territory of Slavic migrants, the phonetic-structural peculiarities of the language of newcomers put over the basic Finno-Ugric foundation of the studied hydronyms. As a result of the research the author concludes that hydronymy of the analyzed area is mainly Finno-Ugric and belongs to the Erzya language and consequently the autochthons here are the Mordvins - the Erzya.
