Tret'yakova Tat'yana Petrovna, Tsvinaria Marina Evgen'evna
Saint Petersburg State University

Abstract. The article presents the pragma-linguistic interpretation of the examples of positive verbal communication in the epos "Beowulf" with the purpose to describe its cognitive and communicative aspects and to identify the forms of its expression in the Old English language. The authors substantiate the thesis that positive communication has a ritual character and represents the specificity of historically transition period of creating the literary landmark; and also make the assumption that speech rituals in "Beowulf" can be considered as examples of formal "polite" communication in the early medieval Anglo-Saxon society.
