THE GENRE PECULIARITY OF THE ENGLISH NOVELS AT THE TIMES OF G. CHAUCER

Abstract. Examining the genre peculiarities of the English novel by the example of "The Canterbury Tales" by G. Chaucer, the author of the research focuses her attention on the sources which influenced the writing of this work, particularly pointing out "The Decameron" by G. Boccaccio. An attempt to conduct the comparative analysis of two pairs of novels similar in plot from "The Canterbury Tales" and "The Decameron" is made. The typological differences of novels of the English and Italian revealed during the intratextual analysis authors allow finding out the genre peculiarity of the English novel of the Chaucer period as one of the key stages of the genre development.
