THE INFLUENCE OF "CONFESSIONS OF AN ENGLISH OPIUM-EATER" BY T. DE QUINCEY ON DEVELOPING THE THEME OF DRUG ADDICTION FORMATION IN THE LITERATURE OF THE XIX CENTURY

Abstract. In the literature the theme of opium addiction got its development largely due to "Confessions of an English Opium-Eater" by Thomas De Quincey, in which for the first time the acute psychological problem of drug addiction formation is touched. The article highlights the scene and stylistic closeness of the "Confessions" by De Quincey and the works by Ch. Dickens, W. Collins, N. V. Gogol, E. A. Poe, where the characters are also opium-eaters, which allows saying about the definite influence of "Confessions" on the creative work of a number of authors, emphasizing, however, different aspects of the problem.
