"THE FIRST EDUCATIONAL BOOK" BY I. I. PAUL'SON (1868): VISUAL TEACHING OF THE RUSSIAN LITERACY

Abstract. The article analyzes the system of visual literacy teaching, developed in the 60s of the XIX century by I. I. Paul’son, which he described in a number of textbooks of methodics for teachers and used as a basis of "The First Educational Book". The paper determines the main functions of the visual constituent of Paul’son’s textbook, identifies the peculiarities of interaction and mutual influence of the text and non-textual illustrative components. The authors show that "The First Educational Book" by Paul’son was one of the first domestic textbooks that focused on the use of not only linguistic, textual means of literacy teaching, but also on non-verbal graphic means.
