SLANGISMS IN THE AMERICAN VARIANT OF THE CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH LANGUAGE: THE PECULIARITIES OF FORMATION AND FUNCTIONING

Abstract. The article investigates slangisms in the American variant of contemporary English. The author considers the system of the American slangisms and identifies their distinguishing features, peculiarities of functioning and the most productive ways of formation. The American slangisms are associated with the social stratification of the American society and its social differentiation, and the basic ways of their formation are metaphorization, contraction, creation of neologisms and occasionalisms, rhymed replacement and inverse slang.
