SUBJECT COMPOSITION OF LEGENDS OF THE CYCLE ABOUT SHAUEI IN THE ADYGHE NART SAGAS

Abstract. Until present the subject repertoire of the cycle about the Nart Shauei in Adyghe folklore hasn’t been an object of a special study. Taking into consideration this fact, the author of the article, basing on vast material, selected in the course of the preparation of the multi-volume edition of the anthological collection "The Narts. The Adyghe Sagas" for publication, focuses on the identification and examination of the major themes and plot-forming motives of the mentioned cycle. The paper also determines the nature of interaction between archaic motives and the motives of more recent origin.
