Abstract. In the paper the authors carry out contrastive analysis of semantic and linguocultural characteristics of Russian and English terms used to denote professions in the area of health and safety protection. According to the authors names of professions are of a double nature in the language as they simultaneously possess characteristics of a term and those of a common literary word. The authors reveal significant differences of conceptual and culturological background between the names of professions in the compared languages. Understanding of these differences contributes to elimination of lexical gaps affecting international professional interaction.
