Abstract. The purpose of the study is the analysis of semantic shifts that cause the appearance of a number of euphemisms in modern English. It is noted that euphemisms in the modern English language are a large vocabulary layer, which is constantly increased. The euphemization process is provided by transformations at the morphological level as a result of semantic derivation. The most productive models currently are metaphorical shifts (gastronomic and zoometaphor) and enantiosemy. The use of the words of general semantics to describe very concrete phenomena and objects is worth noting among semantic shifts.
Key words and phrases: эвфемизмы, способы образования, семантические сдвиги и переносы, семантическая деривация, метафорический перенос, euphemisms, ways of word formation, semantic shifts, semantic derivation, metaphorical shift
