Abstract. The article aims to examine the poetics and structure of the English literary tale as one of the types of postmodern literary discourse. Having analyzed the imagery structure, allusive markers and traditional binary oppositions of a tale by the example of one of the works of the famous postmodern writer N. Gaiman the researcher concludes that modern author’s tale is a striking example of the so called "open" text presupposing numerous interdependent interpretations and active role of a reader in text generation.
