Abstract. This article describes the function of the motive of hunting in H. R. Haggard’s novels. The authors show that it is closely connected with the British culture and the topic of new territories development in the adventure novels of the XIX century. The motive of hunting is an important plot-forming means. In the context of the imperial paradigm the motive of hunting is associated with the ??British colonizers’ idea of Africa as a place where unforgettable adventures and games wait for them. Hunting addictions of the characters are the means of characterology. The writer’s opinion about the killing of animals evolves, as is evidenced by H. R. Haggard’s later philosophical prose.
