EPISTEMOLOGICAL UNCERTAINTY AS A CONSTITUTIVE FEATURE OF J. BARNES’S NOVEL "ENGLAND, ENGLAND"

Abstract. The article examines the novel by J. Barnes "England, England" in terms of post-modernist discourse. It is substantiated that the epistemological uncertainty in the novel is implemented at various levels: the individual memory of each character; the historical memory of the nation; at the level of interpersonal relations of characters; at the story level, etc. At all levels of the novel the idea of duality, the uncertainty of stable perceptions of life is stated; everything is subjected to total doubt. Epistemological uncertainty in general determines the worldview conception of the novel.
