Abstract. The article discloses the content of the notion of V. I. Dal’s "double lexicography", which emphasizes the systemic and analytical nature of the lexicographical activity of the scientist-encyclopaedist, writer. In the course of the study a harmonious linguistic-encyclopedic function of V. I. Dal’s double lexicography is revealed at the level of A. Pluchart’s "Encyclopedic Lexicon", in the preparation of the entries of which V. I. Dal participated, and "Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language"; the types of double lexicographic practices and procedures in the mentioned texts are analyzed.
