"THE BOOK OF MARGERY" BY M. KEMPE AS A MONUMENT OF EARLY ENGLISH PROSE

Abstract. The monument of the medieval English prose "The Book of Margery Kempe" (the XV century) is examined in the genre aspect and is characterized as a spiritual autobiography describing heroine’s religions searching and her experience of Communion. Considering genre nature of the book, the researcher identifies the features of hagiography and vision. Analyzing the gender aspect of narration the researcher discovers a certain similarity between "The Book of Margery Kempe" and "Revelations" by Julian of Norwich. At the same time the author emphasizes the originality of the monument in the context of the English mystical prose of the mentioned period. The paper is the first attempt to study the monument in its meaningful aspects in the domestic medieval studies.
