Abstract. The article analyzes the themes of Y. A. Baratynsky’s poems. Baratynsky is one of the greatest and most intimate poets of his time after Pushkin. In his poems Baratynsky tries to discover what role creativity, love and friendship plays in his destiny and the destiny of the whole mankind. Studying Baratynsky’s works the researcher concludes that the poet, contrary to his predecessors, combines in one personage seemingly incompatible features: good and evil, beauty and ugliness, and discovers the extraordinary in the ordinary. Moreover, he abandons the personage with the mysterious past whom the author sympathizes.
