Abstract. In the article on the basis of the comparative analysis the combinative properties of German prepositions and Karachay-Balkar postpositions are considered. It is noted that prepositions and postpositions as function units - words are characterized by their own, specific compatibility, that prepositions and postpositions themselves as linguistic units do not express time and space. The author has ascertained that the generalized meaning of prepositions and postpositions is reduced to the function of expressing grammatical relations between content words; their morphological form does not need to be explained. Prepositions are characterized by invariability, postpositions can change morphologically. It is determined that the syntactic distribution of prepositions and postpositions is expressed in the fact that for them there is a certain amount of surroundings in the syntactic structure of the word combination. In the syntactic surroundings of German pretexts and Karachay-Balkar postpositions almost all parts of speech can be both on the right and on the left.
