ON WORD STRESS IN THE KARACHAY-BALKAR LANGUAGE

Abstract. This article analyzes the peculiarities of word stress in the Karachay-Balkar language. The study reveals differences between word stress in this language and the stress in some Turkic and in Russian languages, the cases of its fixedness in relation to parts of speech, the differences in the old and new loan words, pair and compound words. The author pays special attention to its main and secondary varieties, phonological role, which is compared with the Russian language, where the differences are specified. The main of them is the following: in Russian, the stress distinguishes both words and their grammatical forms, but in Karachay-Balkar the stress distinguishes lexical and grammatical forms or only grammatical ones.
