LEXICO-SEMANTIC FEATURES OF THE ENGLISH MODAL VERB "CAN" AND ITS RUSSIAN EQUIVALENTS: DEFINITIONAL ANALYSIS

Abstract. The article compares lexicographic definitions of the English verb "can" and its modal correlates in the Russian language and concludes on interlingual similarities and differences in the semantic and functional aspects. The verb "can" is characterized by a number of lexico-semantic variants and limited morphological and syntactical realization in the English sentence while its Russian equivalents are characterized by semantic homogeneity and free morphological and syntactical paradigm.
