THE NOVEL "LORD OF THE FLIES" BY WILLIAM GOLDING: THE LOCUS OF THE COAST AND THE POETICS OF THE FINAL EPISODE

Abstract. The article considers the final episode of the novel "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding from the position of spatiopoetics. The study of spatialization of the central themes of the novel is of particular interest, as in the works of W. Golding the spatiality is one of the dominant codes. The paper analyzes the coast as the localizer of the final episode of the novel, as well as the semantics of marginality that is the key one for this locus. As a result of the study it is established that the central motifs (contact making, game, circle, war) and the key oppositions ("children-adults", "word-silence", "life-death") are spatialized at the locus of the coast. The removal of the semantics of the boundary by the semantics of the circle, determining the tragedy of the finale, is revealed and described.
