Abstract. The topicality of our study consists in a comparative analysis of proverbs by the material of three differently structured languages: Russian, English and Tatar. The proverb of any language is reflection of the national self-consciousness of the people, because the language itself can be regarded as a form of existence and preservation of people’s memory. In the article the definitions of the notion "proverb" are given. The moments of the first mentioning of proverbs in the Russian, English and Tatar languages are observed. Currently, proverbs play an important role in communication between people, reviving their speech. As the researchers note, not all native speakers have clear understanding of proverbs and in some cases they may not understand the meanings of some proverbs and their contextual use. The work presents a classification of proverbs on topics covering all aspects of peoples’ lives, and gives the examples of proverbs in the languages in question.
