Abstract. Along with the "fragments" of ancient myths Nart sagas contain the "pieces of history" - epic names constituting the basis of epic anthroponymy. The article proposes an interpretation of the name "Satana" - epic heroine - through the Indo-Iranian beliefs. The author interprets the motive of incest with a sister as Uryzmag’s retribution for violation of marital taboo in the form of riding donkey in public, with his back to front. This motif in the heroic myths is interpreted in two ways: on the one hand, the beginning in the history of the hero, as in the history of the world, is associated with chaos; on the other hand, incest marks both the maturity and oneness of the hero.
