Abstract. The article discusses the semantics of the English articles from the perspective of the orientating function of language, i.e. the postulate of bio-cognitive theory about languaging as a human’s orientating activity in his/her bio-socio-cultural domain. With that in mind, such an activity includes the manifestation of a human’s "all-rounded" embodied experience rather than separate intellectual or cognitive operations. Thus, the meaning of linguistic forms is formulated based on the cognitive and social nature of a languaging person, the direction of his/her attention, immediate or mediated observation of a world of objects and things. The findings can be applied in the theory of language and methodology of English grammar instruction at all levels.
