Abstract. Basing on the material of L. N. Tolstoy’s realistic novel "Khadzhi-Murat", the article studies the functional role of gender-marked symbolic signs, which accentuate the destructive, inhuman character of any military conflict. Particular attention is paid to the deciphering of allegorical meaning of such favorite symbols of the Russian writer as a flower, a burdock, a bouquet, the child’s smile, a dagger, a watch, a hand, a white handkerchief and the mother’s milk. Each of these sacralized items in the communicative world of the mountaineers and the aesthetic system of Tolstoy weakens the aggression and military conflicts. The parity principle of ethnogender characters consideration emphasizes the commonality of the peacemaking activity of both mountainous and Slavic women.
