THEOPHANIES IN THE NOVEL "THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV"

Submitted: 24.01.2018.
Abstract. The article considers the religious and philosophical importance of artistic representation of theophanies in F. M. Dostoevskys novel "The Brothers Karamazov". After analyzing the literary text the researcher for the first time in literary criticism proves that theophanies, which Dostoevsky introduced in the books "Pro and Contra" and "The Russian Monk", discover religious peculiarities of Ivan Karamazovs poem "The Grand Inquisitor" and Alexei Karamazovs "Diary" devoted to Father Zosima. Accordingly, Ivan Karamazovs poem represents the principles of Catholic spirituality, and Alexei Karamazovs "Diary" - the principles of Orthodox spirituality. Thus the researcher identifies an important aspect of Dostoevskys vision of the western and Russian cultures considering their similarities and differences.
