Abstract. The article examines the English surnames formed from toponyms. The authors for the first time propose the classification of these surnames according to semantic features. The mentioned surnames are classified into those formed from toponyms, which include the words designating defensive constructions, land ownership, settlements, geographical objects, bridges and fords, as well as personal names. The formation of these toponyms occurred under the influence of different languages. The relevance of the study lies in the fact that classification of toponym-derivative surnames according to semantic features promotes deeper understanding of toponyms role in the formation of the English surnames.
Key words and phrases: фамилии, топонимы, древнеанглийский язык, происходить от, оборонительные сооружения, населенные пункты, водные объекты, рельеф местности, личные имена, surnames, toponyms, Old English, to be formed from, defensive constructions, settlements, water objects, relief, personal names
