Abstract. For the first time in Turkish linguistics the author identifies a new functional category of set expressions - clich?, determines their functional-semantic nature and place among the similar phenomena. The paper tries to answer the question whether it would be relevant and appropriate to include them in the phraseological system, provides an analysis of criteria to identify clich? as a category. Set expressions are analyzed from the viewpoint of the theory of speech acts and a functional-semantic approach. The quantity and diversity of clich? types in the Turkish language predetermined the search for new approaches to their systematization. The paper proposes the author’s original classification of this functional unit, introduces the criteria to identify clich?, which comes out as a regulator of communication and is appropriate for different situations conditioned by the peculiarities, norms, traditions adopted in a certain society.
