Abstract. The article argues for using a short humorous text to create a speech situation when teaching English to the students of the field of training "Tourism". Due to understatement typical of jokes and anecdotes such textual materials can serve as efficient stimuli for the students to generate monologic and dialogic statements in the target language, motivational basis for group discussion under the condition of sufficient competence in the subject matter. The paper provides the examples of creating a speech situation on the basis of such texts from "Reader’s Digest" magazine.
