Abstract. The article reveals the meaning of the notion "clause". The authors tackle the problem of differentiating between different types of clauses and criticize the viewpoint, according to which the clauses are divided into finite, non-finite and non-verbal. The clause is considered in the paper as a two-component unit, the verbal component of which contains a finite verb. The clauses are differentiated into two-member sentences containing a full verb and representatives of two-member sentences, in which the predicate is represented by an auxiliary verb. The paper identifies pragmatic functions of clauses with inverted word order.
Key words and phrases: финитная клауза, предложение, репрезентант предложения, инвертированный порядок слов, прагматическая функция, finite clause, sentence, sentence representative, inverted word order, pragmatic function
