INTERRELATION OF LIGHT AND DARKNESS IN J. STEINBECK’S NOVEL "THE WINTER OF OUR DISCONTENT"

Abstract. The article reveals the interrelation of "darkness" and "light" images in the novel "The Winter of Our Discontent" by J. Steinbeck. Their opposition helps to show the characters’ attitude to the reality and other people. These images are intertwined in the text with references to medieval legends about Holy Grail that is one of the allusive bases of the novel. The analysis shows that the main character is on his way between "light" (communication: traditional values, moral principles, double standards) and "darkness" (loneliness: the unconscious, individuality), only the balance of which can lead him to Holy Grail.
