Abstract. In the article, the authors state that the genre nature of the Russian historical novel continues to evolve and search for formal and contextual discoveries. It is ascertained that the activity of the historical novel at the turn of the XX-XXI centuries (fiction by A. Ivanov, Zakhar Prilepin, G. Sadulaev, A. Prokhanov and others), its being in the state of "formation" show the complexity and polyphony of the genre. The variety of the forms of the historical novel, its genre potential, and the wealth of practical material stimulate the emergence of new research subjects.
