THE UNIVERSAL AND THE INDIVIDUAL IN LINGUISTIC REPRESENTATION OF THE POPLAR IMAGE IN THE RUSSIAN POETRY OF THE XIX-XX CENTURIES AND IN A. P. CHEKHOV’S STORY "THE STEPPE"

Abstract. The article for the first time compares linguistic representations of the poplar image in the Russian poetry of the XIX-XX centuries and in A. P. Chekhov’s story "The Steppe". The analysis has allowed identifying the range of comparative tropes of the subject area "Human". The universal semantic features actualized by the appropriate tropes "sound", "behaviour", "state", "age", "form", "feature" are identified. It is shown that the semantic features "slim", "lonely", "to see" and the principle of folk-song parallelism refer to the category "universal" in the linguistic representation of the poplar image in the Russian poetry of the XIX-XX centuries and in A. P. Chekhov’s story "The Steppe". The category "individual" manifests itself in the specificity of realization of these semantic features in poetical and prosaic contexts.
