Abstract. The article considers the evolution and functioning of Hunsr?cker German as a means of inter-dialectal communication among the immigrants of the German origin and their descendants in the south of Brazil. Intensive contacts between the bearers of different dialects in linguistic islands lead to rapid linguistic changes. Linguistic factors promoting the dialect conservation under new social conditions are examined. The influence of the Portuguese language as a majority language is analysed.
