CONTRAST ROLE IN A FICTION WORK COMPOSITION (BY THE MATERIAL OF F. SCOTT FITZGERALD’S SHORT STORY "THE BABY PARTY")

Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of contrast role in a fiction work construction. As material for the research, the short story genre has been chosen, namely F. Scott Fitzgerald’s story "The Baby Party", which is considered in this perspective for the first time, and it determines this study novelty. Basing on the dictemic theory of the text, the author proves the multi-contrast nature of the dictema that is confirmed by examples at the structural (syntactic), semantic, and compositional levels. The latter is particularly replete with contrast elements: opposition of speech types, opposition of characters, and change in the narrative planes. All these things make contrast an expressive and meaningful technique in a fiction work construction.
