Abstract. The article considers the possibility of using a short humorous text as a standard illustrating the native English speakers verbal behaviour in teaching professional foreign language to students of non-linguistic fields of study. The author gives examples of comic stories from a popular American edition demonstrating different educational functions of the text material. The paper offers a three-stage model of speech competence formation of students majoring in "Jurisprudence", which is developed taking into account the speech potential of a joke or anecdote.
