Abstract. The article analyses personages’ range of reading in A. S. Pushkin’s story "The Squire’s Daughter" and clarifies the role of reminiscences in the structure of the personages’ images. Numerous references to other works are considered as the techniques to describe the personages and the ways to disclose the author’s attitude. References to works of different genres and trends characterrize an individual’s life style and worldview. The personages’ reading experience motivates them to wear a mask, and, consequently, initiates a game, which unfolds in a story. Direct references to I. B. Bogdanovich’s and N. M. Karamzin’s works help the reader to understand the author’s intention to depict peoples’ private life, to describe the Russian national character.
