Abstract. The article examines the principles for classifying idioms: socio-linguistic, thematic, semantic, and functional ones. The paper identifies the specificity of the American idiomatics and suggests techniques to translate it into Russian. The originality of the study lies in the fact that the emphasis is made on "idiomaticity" as a linguo-culturological component creating an author’s original style. The analysis indicates that the American non-equivalent or nearly non-equivalent phraseological units represent different perception of reality, for example, time and space.
Key words and phrases: фразеологические единицы, принципы классификации, чистые идиомы, полуидиомы, буквальные идиомы, реалии, ложные когнаты, лингвокультурологический компонент, phraseological units, principles for classifying, pure idioms, semi-idioms, literal idioms, realia, false cognates, linguo-culturological component
