Abstract. The article is devoted to identifying the functional peculiarities of the motive of shadow in the story by the modern prosaic Yury Buida "At the Knackery" in the context of the world modelling. The paper focuses on the following issues: parody image of a hagiographic character, peculiarities of secondary personages’ images forming the absurd world, ways to create mystic space of shadows, symbolic meaning of key details and images. Scientific originality of the study involves analysing artistic aspects of Buida’s story, which have not previously attracted researchers’ attention. The analysis allows clarifying the ideological conception of the story. The motive of shadow promotes the formation of the absurd modern world losing its spiritual vectors.
