Abstract. The article is devoted to analysing the first part of S. P. Balabin’s dilogy "The Golden Empire" reviving Primorye’s remote past when the Mongolian hordes crushed the powerful Golden Empire of Jurchen, which over the decades resisted bellicose Genghis Khan. By the material of the historical novel "Varicoloured Arrows of S?lde" devoted to medieval history and culture, the paper examines sacral beliefs and rituals, analyses the role of the mythologeme "death - resurrection" as meaningful, structure-forming. Its functioning is analysed in the context of the novel’s basic events, in the interaction with other elements of mytho-poetics, the main character’s story. It is shown that Ile’s image, the hero’s initiation are closely associated with the history of the Golden Empire, and broadly - with the universe; and the novel’s leitmotivs and recurring mytho-poetical images represent the conceptions of birth and death, eternity, universe, power, natural forces, etc.
