Abstract. The article considers the peculiarities of the essay genre development in the Udmurt literature of the Great Patriotic War period. The development of the Udmurt publicism of 1941-1945 is considered as an important stage in the history of the national literature. The authors reveal specific features of the Udmurt front-line essay: documentary character, combination of dry facts and sublime romantic pathos, direct perception of tragic war events by a newly recruited soldier. Relevance of military publicism for the modern reader is emphasized.
