Abstract. The article is devoted to identifying the basic factors determining the frequency dominants of words. The study contributes to developing a system of word usage preferences, which the native Russian speakers are intuitively guided by to represent meaningful semantic components. It includes the following word groups: words with positive assessment but lacking subjective evaluation, designations of subjective possibilities; words with neutral style and stylistic colouring; words, semantics of which does not include the semes "absence, deprivation of something", different types of quantitative semes and semes of reflexivity. The study is based on the linguistic material acquired from the frequency dictionary of Russian; the comparative analysis method is applied to analyze the frequency of contrastive words.
