Abstract. The article examines the contradiction between the remarkably high status of a poet among his compatriots and the fact that poetry seems to be of little practical value for an individual. The author examines one of the motives, which cause the need for poetry. This motive consists in establishing new, unfamiliar to the national linguistic consciousness sematic relations between phenomena of reality. The paper justifies the thesis that creating unusual word combinations, poets accumulate the semantic potential of certain words and the national language on the whole.
