Abstract. The article reveals the peculiarities of compulsory military serving by the sailors of merchant ships in the Russian empire (the second half of the XIX^th - the beginning of the XX^th centuries). The author pays special attention to the benefits and deferments which were granted to not only the command staff of merchant ships but also to the ranks.
