Abstract. The author describes freedom of speech under modern Russian conditions. The media are one of the most important social institutions devoted to ensuring the freedom of speech and press, and it is a major condition of legal state building and civil society maturing. The conversion from an authoritarian Soviet model to pluralistic media is accompanied by increased tension in the post-Soviet information area.
