LEGEND OF HUA MU-LAN: MORAL GUIDELINES AND ORIENTALISM

Abstract. The author studies the phenomenon of the girl Hua Mu-lan's legendary image popularity in Chinese culture and popular culture of the West at the end of the XXth - the beginning of the XXIst century, shows that the story of her well-behaved actions and military prowess is found in the ancient poem, for the first time in national historiography considers moral imperatives offered in the poem, analyzes their interpretations in Chinese and Western civilizations, and comes to the conclusion that the centuries-old evolution of the image was determined by historical conditions, political goals, gender stereotypes, aesthetic preferences and Orientalism as modern discourse.
